The annual meeting of the Missouri Physiological Society is the ideal venue to meet other MO physiologists and hear about their latest findings. Students have the opportunity to get in touch with established scientists and receive valuable feedback during the poster session. Teaching faculty can connect with like-minded people to discuss the important role of physiology in the classroom and the future career of their students.

KEYNOTE: Rick Samson, Professor at Saint Louis University and next president of the American Physiological Society.

“Unlocking the Treasure Chest: Developing Orphan G Protein-Coupled Receptors Into Therapeutic Targets”

Willis K. “Rick” Samson, PhD, DSc, FAPS, is professor of pharmacology and physiology and director of biomedical science graduate programs in the School of Medicine at Saint Louis University (SLU). He earned his bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Duke University in Durham, North Carolina; his PhD from the University of Texas Health Science Center at Dallas; and his DSc from Westminster College in Fulton, Missouri. Dr. Samson is the vice chair of the SLU School of Medicine’s Pharmacology and Physiology Department and a member of SLU’s COVID-19 Task Force. He serves on study sections and editorial boards for a number of funding agencies, scientific organizations, and journals.

Dr. Samson has served on the APS Council from 2016 to 2019 and has been a member of numerous committees in APS. He is a past associate editor and editor-in-chief for the American Journal of Physiology-Regulatory, Integrative and Comparative Physiology and is currently deputy editor of Physiological Reviews. His years of dedicated service to APS has resulted in his becoming the current President-Elect and the 2023-24 President of APS.
